Summer of Outreach!

NCPC has a few big mission projects, and most of them get ramped up in the summer.

Rocky Mountain Mission is our program to host youth groups from around the country for a week in Nederland, to pair eager young people with opportunities to serve, all surrounded by a stunning natural environment that can help them consider God’s place in their lives. Teenagers help seniors and low income neighbors with all sorts of home projects, yard work, fire mitigation, laying up firewood, and more; and they help all sorts of local agencies such as the Food Pantry, Carousel of Happiness, Clothing Closet, and Town of Nederland, with projects that serve folks in our little town. Jim Reis serves as our Work Coordinator (in charge of sweat, from 8-4), and Bailey Johnson is our Community Coordinator (she leads the fun, music, and devotionals, from 4-9). This year we have groups from Texas and Colorado (June 16-22), North Carolina (June 23-29), Abilene (July 7-13), Houston (July 14-20), and Oregon (July 28-Aug 3). Contact Pastor Hansen, if you have a project in mind, or want to help, or want to offer a meal to our visitors on a Sun or Wed night.

Socks & Sandwiches is an outreach to anyone in need of welcome and a meal. Each Thursday in the summer at noon we meet homeless campers, and share food, socks, hygiene products, and access to programs to get out of the woods or education for camping appropriately. For several years we have grown from about 100 meals to about 240 last summer. Thanks to our team leaders on this project, from across Nederland, Henry Schliff (St Rita’s Chapel), Diana Nelson (NCPC), Kathy Meyer (NCPC), and Brigitte Johnson (community volunteer). Thanks also to the Food Pantry and Peak to Peak Counseling, for being such great partners. Contact Pastor Hansen, if you want to volunteer or share a dish on some Thursday upcoming.

Nederland Interagency Council for Homeless Encampments (NICHE) is a collaborative organization with shared responsibilities that foster public health and safety through care for the vulnerable, stewardship of natural resources, and respect for the needs of the mountain community. Foremost, we bring agencies together to work more efficiently on the issues surrounding public lands homelessness. Now we also have Claudia Schauffler, our Summer Homeless Advocate for Residential Encampments, to connect folks to helpful resources and to educate them about appropriate camping practices. In 2018 Claudia and Pastor Hansen met 175 homeless campers, and connected 64 of them to services such as health care, mental health, job opportunities and training, housing, child support, and more. Already in 2019, they have met over 100 people in need — and the summer has just begun! NICHE has a steering committee composed of leaders from the church, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Ned Police, US Forest Service, Ned Town Hall, and Boulder County Commissioner’s Office. As well, we work with the Peak to Peak Forest Watch, CO Parks & Wildlife, Ned Fire, Boulder Homeless Shelter, Boulder Bridge House, Peak to Peak Human Services Alliance, BoCo Community Services, BoCo Public Health, Boulder Open Space, Boulder Water Quality, Boulder Police Homeless Outreach Team, Nederland business partners, and several governmental offices.
